Vice President Leni Robredo is in favor of the idea of government takeover of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Philippines in Subic.
She said the suggestion of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana is “sound”. “Tingin ko sound ‘yung kanyang suggestion na i-takeover na ng Philippine government tapos hayaan na ‘yung Philippine Navy ‘yung mag manage,” she said in her RMN-DZXL 558 radio program on January 20.
She added that during the recent briefing with the defense and security sector, she learned that the Philippine Navy has no permanent docking facility for its five large ships.
“So kung ibibigay sana sa Philippine Navy ito napakalaking bagay kasi napaka-strategic ng lugar,” she said.
She also said that the idea raised by Senator Zubiri of government having majority shares but giving the management to private entity is also sound. However, she expressed reservation on the idea of Chinese firm taking over Hanjin’s facility.
“Kung titignan natin iyong mapa, napakalapit nito sa Bajo de Masinloc. Sobrang lapit niya na ‘pag Chinese company iyong nag-take over dito sa Hanjin, magkakaron na ng dahilan para pasukin tayo ng pasukin ‘nung mga Chinese vessels on the guise na magpapaayos, magrerefuel, magpapahinga. Parang ni-legitimize natin iyong pagpasok sa atin. Napakadelikado nito,” the Vice President explained.
“Pakiusap lang natin sa pamahalaan, parang huwag padalos-dalos iyong pag-desisyon na ibibigay ito sa Chinese company kasi nakataya iyong ating seguridad dito,” she added.
