The United States Navy has sent Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG-54) to transit through the Taiwan Strait.

“The transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” US Navy 7th Fleet spokesperson Commander Clay Doss said in a statement on July 24.

“The US Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,” he added.

Also on July 24, China released a defense white paper, 10th since 1998 and the first comprehensive white paper since 2012.

It was stated in the white paper that China adheres to peaceful reunification, however, it also noted that China makes “no promise to renounce the use of force, and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures.”

It said that China’s armed forces People’s Liberation Army (PLA) “will resolutely defeat anyone attempting to separate Taiwan from China and safeguard national unity at all costs.”
