US, Australian submarines operate together

United States Navy Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Santa Fe (SSN 763) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Collins-class submarines HMAS Collins, HMAS Farncomb, HMAS Dechaineux and HMAS Sheean have sailed together on February 18 in the West Australian exercise area on February 18.

“The submarines are participating in a number of activities, including Exercise Lungfish 2019 and Exercise Ocean Explorer 2019,” the US Navy said.

According to Royal Australian Navy, Collins Class submarines are an essential part of Australia’s naval capability, providing a strategic advantage in terms of surveillance and protection of our maritime approaches.

RAN added that the sight sight of four RAN submarines sailing in company is rarely seen due to the submarine squadron’s high operational tempo but that is what occurred off the coast of Western Australia.
