US affirms support to AFP modernization

Acting United States Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan and Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana conducted a meeting on April 1 at Pentagon.

According to Acting Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Charles E. Summers Jr., the purpose of the meeting was to reaffirm the enduring alliance between the United States and the Philippines and to discuss bilateral issues in the relationship.

The two sides has agreed US support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization plans.


“The two leaders discussed a broad range of defense issues and mutual steps to strengthen the alliance,” Summers said. “They agreed on the need to increase interoperability between our respective militaries, through exercises, training, and U.S. support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ modernization plans.”

He added that Shanahan and Lorenzana affirmed their common commitment to fighting terrorism in Southeast Asia.
