Turkey, PHL ink defense industry cooperation

Security & Defense

The Philippines and Turkey signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Defense Industry Cooperation on December 18 at the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Headquarters at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

The agreement was signed by Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Ismail Demir for the Department of National Defense (DND) and Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) of the Republic of Turkey, respectively.

The said MOU focuses on government-to-government acquisitions, as well as the development, production, co-production, and transfer of defense technology between the DND and the SSB.

During the signing event, the Turkish side gave the Philippine side scale models of the TAI/AgustaWestland T129 ATAK attack helicopter and Ada-class (MILGEM project) corvette.

Secretary Lorenzana confirmed early this month that PAF technical working group (TWG) for the attack helicopter acquisition project chose the Turkish T129 ATAK helicopters. He added that with the allocated budget for the attack helicopter acquisition project PAF may get less than 10 units.
