Turkey, Philippines signing defense cooperation agreement

“[W]e finally got confirmation from several reliable sources from the defense department, military and defense industries, that Turkey and the Philippines will sign a defense cooperation Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), with the tentative date placed on 18th December 2018,” MaxDefense Philippines said.

According to MaxDefense, this MOA on defense cooperation between Philippines and Turkey “will pave the way for an Implementation Agreement to be made that allows Government to Government (G2G) defense acquisitions between the two countries.”

It added that the MOA “is timely as the Philippine Air Force chose the Turkish-made T129 ATAK attack helicopter for their Attack Helicopter acquisition program. The DND would be starting formal negotiations with it’s Turkish counterparts and TAI, considering the project is an urgent one and whose SARO was already released months ago.”

MaxDefense also noted that aside from TAI, other Turkish defense firms like FNSS, Otokar, Aselsan, Roketsan, Havelsan may also benefit from the MOA.

National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed last week that PAF technical working group (TWG) for the attack helicopter acquisition project chose Turkish T129 ATAK helicopters.

He added that with the allocated budget for the attack helicopter acquisition project PAF may get less than 10 units.

In 2017, the Philippines and Turkey signed a Declaration of Intent (DOI) on Defense Cooperation.
