Scout Rangers encounter 100 Abu Sayyaf in Sulu

A clash between 5th Scout Ranger Battalion and around 100 Abu Sayyaf terrorists occurred in Patikul, Sulu noon of February 2, the military said.

According to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM), the terrorists are under Hajan Sawadjaan who is believed to be involved in the the January 27 Jolo cathedral bombing.

On January 31, WESTMINCOM said that the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion clashed with about 20 members of the Abu Sayyaf/Ajang-Ajang group under Macrin in Barangay Latih, Patikul, Sulu.


Said gunfight ensued for five minutes with no casualty incurred on the government troops.

As of 1:30 pm of February 1, deaths caused by the Jolo cathedral blasts reached twenty-two: six soldiers, one coast guard, and 15 civilians; and 101 wounded: 14 soldiers, 2 coast guard personnel, and 85 civilians.
