Secretary Locsin said “comparability issues are real.”
He also pointed out that “the United States is our only and only possible military ally.”
“Other countries sell great equipment to Vietnam (like Russian AK47s which are superb) but we would face US sanctions. We get pistols from variety of countries all first class,” he added.
However, he replied “trying” to statement saying “maybe there is a way to negotiate a deal with US to avoid sanctions if we purchase arms from Russia. If Vietnam can do it, we should be able to as well, to the extent that the compatibility issues are addressed, & only if that is really within our country’s needs/interest.”
