The Philippines is in the process of procuring 74,000 Glock pistols from United States, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told reporters on September 27.
Secretary Lorenzana said among the topics discussed when he met United States Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis and other US high officials last week in US is the procurement of some US equipment.
He said he asked for help for some procurement to get approval of US Congress.
“Practically I mentioned the same thing to Secretary Mattis and other people I talked to because we are procuring their 74,000 Glock pistols which is now being certified by the US Congress,” Lorenzana said.
“Every defense article that they sell outside must be certified by the US Congress. Those are what we’ve talked about, plus we also talked about exercises here that are going every year, plus the EDCA,” he explained.
According to Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Dana W. White, in their meeting last week, Lorenzana and Mattis “discussed a broad range of defense issues, to include their commitment to fighting terrorism and reaffirmed U.S. military advisory support to assist the Philippines in combatting ISIS and other violent extremist networks.”
“Secretary Mattis thanked Secretary Lorenzana for his country’s contribution to maritime security through its trilateral air and maritime patrols with Indonesia and Malaysia in the Sulu and Celebes Seas,” White added.
