“Pinalubog na ang barko, iniwan pa ang crew members sa dagat. Kaibigan ba talaga ang China?” outgoing Senator JV Ejercito said in a statement posted in his Twitter account.
This is after National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that a Chinese fishing vessel abandoned a Filipino fishing vessel and its 22 crew member after a collision near Reed Bank in West Philippine Sea on June 9.
“The F/B GIMVER 1 was anchored at the time when it was hit by the Chinese fishing vessel,” Secretary Lorenzana said. “Fortunately, a Vietnamese fishing vessel was in the vicinity and rescued all 22 fishermen and brought them to safety in coordination with the AFP’s Western Command. The BRP Ramon Alcaraz, which was conducting a routine maritime patrol in the area, was ordered to assist in the recovery of F/B GIMVER 1 and its crew.”
“[W]e condemn in the strongest terms the cowardly action of the suspected Chinese fishing vessel and its crew for abandoning the Filipino crew. This is not the expected action from a responsible and friendly people,” he added.
Lorenzana is also calling for a formal investigation and diplomatic steps to prevent a repeat of said incident.
