Japanese navy’s first female squadron commander visits PHL

Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Captain Ryoko Azuma, the commander of JMSDF Escort Division One visited the Philippines aboard Azisuki-class destroyer JS Akizuki (DD-115).

Captain Azuma rendered courtesy call to Philippine Navy Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) commander Rear Admiral Allan Ferdinand V Cusi at Headquarters NETC, San Antonio, Zambales on April 13.

Azuma was accompanied by JS Akizuki commanding officer Commander Kazunori Ishii and Defense Attache of Japan to the Philippines Colonel Kazunobu Akutsu.

The Japanese destroyer will be capping her three-day goodwill visit to the Philippines with a passing exercise (PASSEX) with Philippine naval units on Monday.

“The visit aims to strengthen the relationship between the two navies. It will further enhance and sustain the promotion of peace, stability and maritime cooperation of the two countries through naval diplomacy and camaraderie,” Philippine Navy spokesperson Captain Lued Lincuna said.
