Indonesian state-owned defense and security equipment manufacturer PT Pindad has conducted a product demonstration of its Harimau Hitam medium tank in Indonesia to Philippine defense and military officials.
Indonesian news outlet Tempo quoted PT Pindad President Director Abraham Mose, in a report last week, saying that “they’re (Philippines) in need of 44 units, it’s an open tender. Hopefully, we’ll win it.”
Tempo reported that Abraham said PT Pindad invited Philippine Department of National Defense to witness the tank’s shooting capabilities.
“That is one of the requirements, to come and witness the shooting test in Ciputat,” Abraham said.
Harimau Hitam is a collaborative tank program between Turkish manufacturer FNSS and Indonesian manufacturer PT Pindad.
“PT Pindad is among the frontrunners for the Light Tank project [for Philippine Army], which looks at acquiring between 30 to 44 units of tracked light or medium tanks armed with a 105mm tank gun, enough to equip a battalion,” MaxDefense Philippines said.
MaxDefense noted that the exact number of tanks to be acquired is yet to be finalized due “to the possibility of dividing the numbers into tracked and wheeled platforms, depending on the PA [Mechanized Infantry Division]’s final decision.”
