Ending insurgency more attainable in 3 years: defense chief

Ending the 50-year communist insurgency in the Philippines is more attainable in three years, this was stated by National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana during the Joint Department of National Defense (DND)-Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) 2019 New Year’s Call.

“We cannot do it this year dahil napakalaking problema yan, if you will recall this insurgency has been going on for the past 50 years and we cannot end it in one year, siguro ang target natin ngayon is the remaining three years of President Duterte’s presidency, kaya siguro nating gawin yun,” Secretary Lorenzana told reporters.

In his speech during the said event, Lorenzana said “for our people and country, our New Year’s resolution should be to continue to be more vigilant for peace and make efforts to end insurgency, terrorism, and lawlessness.”

“As the Chief-of-Staff said a while ago, we plan to end insurgency once and for all and we are into that now,” he said. “So, this early, we have to begin thinking and planning about new approaches and strategies to effectively end any threats and security concerns in our country.”
