Duterte appoints EASTMINCOM commander as AFP chief

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)-Eastern Mindanao Command (EASTMINCOM) commanding general Lieutenant General Benjamin R. Madrigal Jr. as AFP Chief-of-Staff effective December 12.

Current AFP chief General Carlito Galvez Jr. is set for retirement on December 12.

In President Duterte’s letter to National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, he said “I wish to inform you that per your letter-endorsement and in accordance with the recommendation of the Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Chairman, AFP Board of Generals, pursuant to Republic Act No.8186, as amended by Republic Act No. 9188, the designation of Lieutenant General Benjamin R. Madrigal Junior 0-9288 Armed Forces of the Philippines as Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines vice Gen. Carlito G. Galvez Jr. 0-9267 AFP is hereby approved effective December 12, 2018.”


General Galvez is being eyed by President Duterte as his Adviser on the Peace Process.

“The President announced his intention to appoint General Carlito Galvez, Jr. to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process,” Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador S. Panelo said in a statement.
