The Chinese government said that the passing of Royal Navy’s landing platform dock HMS Albion near Paracel Islands without its approval is wrong.
“[O]ne thing is certain: what the British side did is wrong. It obviously runs counter to the consensus and spirit put forth by the leaders of our two countries that we are willing to join hands to build a “golden era” of China-UK ties,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on September 7.
“It will have a negative impact on the development of China-UK relations. We hope that the British side can recognize the severity of this issue and take concrete actions to correct their mistake,” she added.
The Chinese government said on September 6 that “the Chinese navy identified and verified the British warship in accordance with the law and warned and expelled it.”
“The relevant behavior of the British warship violated the Chinese law and relevant international law and infringed upon China’s sovereignty. China is firmly opposed to this. We have lodged stern representations with the British side and expressed our strong dissatisfaction,” she added.
“The Chinese side strongly urges Britain to stop this kind of provocation lest it should undermine the overall picture of bilateral ties as well as regional peace and stability. China will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and security,” she said.
