“The construction of a third aircraft carrier – the Type 002 – appears to be underway at China’s Jiangnan Shipyard,” says ChinaPower in an article.
ChinaPower is a project under Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). According ChinaPower website, it provides an in-depth understanding of the evolving nature of Chinese power relative to other countries.
“The project examines five interrelated categories of Chinese power: military, economics, technology, social, and international image,” ChinaPower noted.
ChinaPower said that commercial satellite imagery collected on April 17, 2019 shows significant new activity since ChinaPower first analyzed the shipyard in late 2018.
“Visible through the clouds and mist is what looks to be a bow and main hull section of a large vessel. While details regarding the Type 002 are limited, what is observable at Jiangnan is consistent with what is expected for the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) third aircraft carrier,” it added.
“Various unofficial reports speculate that the conventionally-powered Type 002 will be larger than its predecessors and will feature an electromagnetic catapult launch system,” it added.
China’s third aircraft carrier is projected to be operational by 2022.
