The Keel Laying Ceremonies for Philippine Navy’s first of two frigate ordered from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is scheduled October 16 in HHI’s shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, MaxDefense Philippines said.

“The event will be attended by Philippine Navy FOIC VAdm. Robert Empedrad, who is currently in South Korea for several reasons,” MaxDefense said.

It noted that the said event is “one of the most important milestone of shipbuilding, as this would be the event marking the first joining of modules to form the ship’s hull.”

The ceremonial first steel-cutting for this first frigate (P159) took place last April. The ceremonial first steel-cutting for the second frigate (P160) was held last month.

Delivery of Philippines’ first frigate is expected by 2020 with the second frigate in 2021.
