Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana said during the commissioning of Philippine Navy frigate BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151) on March 19 that seeing the defense capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) flourish is a dream come true. He said that there is a plan to acquire 6 offshore patrol vessels and 2 corvettes.
He also noted how he talked about the need to improve the capabilities of the Philippine Navy when he was still an Army captain.
“When I was a Captain, I applied for a scholarship to a local university. In the last phase, we were asked to give an impromptu speech on any subject of our choosing. Without hesitation, I went on to talk about how we need to improve the Philippine Navy,” Secretary Lorenzana said.
“It does not take a genius to know that an archipelago nation like ours needs a strong naval force,” he explained.
“It gives me great pleasure to officiate in the christening of our second frigate, the BRP Antonio Luna. We are also looking into acquiring additional 6 offshore patrol vessels and 2 corvettes. Even after years of service, witnessing our defense capabilities flourish feels like a dream come true,” he added.
