National Security Adviser (NSA) Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said that among the priorities of the government is strengthening of defense in the West Philippine Sea and add more marine scientific research.

“We will add more marine scientific research, the putting up of lighthouses, and using technology to care of our maritime domain,” Secretary Esperon said during a post-SONA 2019 press conference on July 23.

“We will have now the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and imagery satellite to take care of our maritime domain,” he said. “That will therefore involve and strengthen our fishing activities in our maritime domain.”

Esperon said that lighthouses were built in 2018 in Parola, Pag-asa, Panata, Likas, and Patag islands in West Philippine Sea. He added that five more will be built this year. Esperon explained that aside from serving its purpose for safety of navigation and life at sea, a lighthouse also means sovereignty.
