US to donate 500 million doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to the world

The Biden administration is planning to donate 500 million doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to nearly 100 countries over the next two years, Reuters reported citing three sources.

US President Joe Biden will reportedly announce the commitment at G7 Summit in Britain.

According to sources cited by Reuters,  US is eyeing to distribute 200 million shots this year and another 300 million in the first half of next year to 92 lower-income countries and the African Union.

The report added that the donations will go through the COVAX vaccine program led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

President Biden before his departure on Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews Prince George’s County, Maryland said he will be announcing his global vaccine strategy at the summit.

“I have one and I’ll be announcing it,” Biden said when asked if he is expecting to come out with a vaccine strategy for the world at the summit.
