Upcoming Korean-made Navy warships will be Jose Rizal-class frigates

“It’s BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151) for the first and second ships of the Jose Rizal-class frigates, as approved by Pres. Duterte himself,” MaxDefense Philippine said in its social networking page on January 25 confirming that the upcoming 2 frigates being built by South Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries for the Philippine Navy will be named after Jose Rizal and General Antonio Luna.

The ceremonial steel-cutting for the first frigate, future BRP Jose Rizal took place in April 2018, while the ceremonial steel cutting for the second frigate, future BRP Antonio Luna, was held in September 2018.

Keel Laying Ceremony for the first frigate was held on October 16.

Delivery of first frigate is expected first quarter of 2020, while the second frigate is expected to be delivered in 2021.

In December 2018, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana revealed that the possible names of Philippine Navy’s upcoming frigates will be BRP Jose Rizal and BRP Antonio Luna.
