Trillanes hits arrest of man who called Duterte ‘buang’

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has condemned the arrest of 41-year-old resident of Agusan del Norte, Reynaldo Orcullo, for calling President Rodrigo Duterte “buang”.

“I strongly condemn the warrantless arrest of the person who called Duterte ‘buang’ in a social media post,” Trillanes said in a statement May 15.

“That is clearly illegal and against the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and of expression. Besides, telling the truth is never libelous,” the former senator added.

He also called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) “to exercise due restraint and sound judgment in the performance of their duty, especially in these trying times.”

In a statement on May 13, Police Regional Office (PRO) Caraga said Orcullo posted in his personal Facebook account libelous words “ALAM NA PATTERN, MOSALIDA SI GO KONUHAY SIYA MOHANGYO SA BUANG NGA PANGULO, DIGONG GAGO. BUANG SI DIGONG” prompting the authorities to track him down for violation of Section 4 of RA No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

“Again I remind our social media users to think thrice before posting on any social media platform. Be responsible netizens. We do enjoy the blessings of democracy but never go beyond from what you think is right without minding you violate the provisions of the law,” PRO Caraga chief Police Brigadier General Joselito T. Esquivel said.
