Incoming Senator Francis Tolentino is proposing to add a fourth star to the Philippine flag to represent Philippine (Benham) Rise.
“The current Philippine flag’s three stars which symbolize the islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, reflect the history of this nation. On this same line of thought, I wish to add a fourth star to represent the Benham or Philippine Rise as it symbolizes the future of our country and its people,” Tolentino said in a statement.
“Looking back in history, our country slowly rose from oblivion and emerged a free and independent nation. This is similarly what I foresee for the Benham Rise – gradually rising and rightfully seeking recognition,” he explained.
He said that eighty years from now, Benham Rise covering 13 million hectares, will be as prominent an area as the present day Luzon, where future generations will thrive and whose development will form part of the overall development of the Philippines.
“I believe that if we accord the highest reverence for the history of our nation, with all its symbols and representations, we ought to as well reserve respect for the future of this nation,” he said.
He said the inclusion of a fourth star in the Philippine flag to represent the Benham Rise is a first step to inculcate patriotism among our youth today.
“It is in the spirit of a national shared destiny and love for country that I espouse a fourth star in the Philippine flag,” he added.
