Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade said that they are in serious talks with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) for the possible re-opening of Subic Bay International Airport.
“We are now closely looking at making the Subic Airport operational once again. We are in serious talks with the Subic authorities,” Secretary Tugade said during a press briefing in Capas, Tarlac were the National Government Administrative Center (NGAC) within the New Clark City is being developed.
“I think, sa tamang panahon, magiging operational po iyan – siguro hindi aabutan ng first or second quarter next year,” he said.
“If you give life to the airport, which has been inoperable for a number of years, number one you’re correct, you have to look at the structure, which is not a major problem. The problem there is the aviation instrument component,” he said.
He said among the important considerations in putting up an airport is safety.
“You can’t just put an airport simply because an aircraft will land, but the consideration is if you put up an airport, aircraft will land on a safety basis so… you have to recognize the aviation instrumentation,” he explained.
