South Korea to spend more on locally made defense hardware

During a conference with South Korean defense industry leaders on June 15, South Korea Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo said that the South Korean government will be spending more on locally made defense hardware.

This is amid COVID-19’s negative effects on all fronts, including South Korean defense industry.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in order to protect the local defense industry, the government will expand domestic defense spending and promote the local sourcing of hardware.

“We are putting efforts to spend more on purchasing arms from local companies, instead of buying from abroad, when drawing the budget plan for next year,” Jeong said as quoted by The Korea Herald.
