Process of terminating Visiting Forces Agreement with US starts

The process of terminating the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) has started after President Rodrigo Duterte gave the United States government one month to reverse its decision to cancel Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa’s US visa.

“Kasi tinanong ko sya kagabi, when will the process start?” Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Salvador Panelo said January 24.

Panelo added that the President answered “tonight”.

Moreover, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said on Twitter, “Leaving for [Washington, DC] on unrelated matters. But called Sec Lorenzana as Vice Chair—I am Chair of VFA—to start process of terminating USFVA.”

On January 23, President Duterte gave US 1 month.

“I’m warning you, this is the first time, ‘pag hindi ninyo ginawa ang correction diyan, I will terminate the basis of Visiting Forces Agreement. Tapusin ko ‘yang putang inang ‘yan,” he said during an event for distribution of benefits for former rebels at San Isidro Civic Center in San Isidro, Leyte.

“I’m giving notice. I’m giving the American government one month from now,” he added.
