President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to land via helicopter on Philippine Navy’s landing platform dock BRP Davao del Sur (LD-602) in Philippine Rise this afternoon.
According to media reports, it was mentioned in event briefing that President Duterte may ride a jet ski in Philippine Rise if the weather permits.
President Duterte will be leading the commemoration of the April 2012 United Nations declaration that Philippine Rise is part of Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and extended continental shelf; and the renaming of Benham Rise to Philippine Rise by Duterte last May 2017.
He will also send off 50 scientists who will conduct maritime scientific research in the area.
Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force are expected to deploy a number their assets for the said event.
According to Jay Batongbacal, an Associate Professor of Law at the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Director of UP Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, a nine-ship flotilla will sail in Philippine Rise with a number of PAF aircraft providing air cover.
“The 9-ship flotilla sailing with aircraft fly-by’s will probably be the single largest coordinated mobilization of the Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force in recent years, possibly its first major operation in the open waters of the Pacific Ocean,” Batongbacal said.
