President Duterte jokes about “Province of Philippines, Republic of China”

President Rodrigo Duterte during the 10th Biennial National Convention and 20th Founding Anniversary Celebration of the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. (CFBCI) at the Fiesta Pavillion of the Manila Hotel joked about Philippines becoming a province of China.

“I respect [China President] Xi Jinping. They assured us, they will not build anything there in Scarborough Shoal. Maniwala kayo, kasi ‘yan ang commitment sa akin. Si Xi Jinping mismo nag-sabi, and he is a man of honor,” the President said.

“Kaya nga sabi ko, why are you so sparing, gusto ninyo gawain nalang ninyo kaming province – Philippine province of China, ‘di wala tayong problema,” he quipped. “Libre na lahat.”

“Kasi ‘yung oil, joint naman, dito ‘yung pinaka marami. 2/3 sa amin, 1/3 sa inyo. Mayaman naman kayo, ‘tska probinsiya na kami. Province of Philippines, Republic of China,” he added in jest. “Hayaan mo nalang ‘yung Taipei, ‘wag na natin galawin.”

“Makuha mo ang Philippines, wala ng problema, kasi daming pera e,” the President said.

Early on his speech, the President said “itong claim sa China Sea, talagang atin ‘yan, in so far as the Republic of the Philippines is concerned. I am ready to put my presidency, my career as president, my life and honor – it has been the claim of the Republic of the Philippines na atin ‘yan which we call now the West Philippine Sea.

“Walang kaduda-duda, in front of the Ambassador [of China], I tell you we will insist but what could be the components of our demands and our insistence. We can only be diplomatic, we can only be talking on friendly and civilized terms,” he added.

He noted that the Philippines cannot go to disputed territories with warships and coat guard vessels and wave riffles. “It is unrealistic, it cannot be true,” he said.

The President said he will not let Filipino troops be in position just to be slaughtered.
