The Filipino sailing crew of donated retired South Korean Pohang-class corvette, former ROKS Chungju (PCC-762), was sent off mid-February, this was confirmed by National Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong in a report by PNA.
The crew will be undergoing familiarization and training for operations and maintenance.
Andolong also noted that official turnover for the warship may take place in June.
“The dry-docking and other related repairs of ‘Pohang’ corvette are set to be completed in the second week of June, and turnover is estimated to be by the third week of the same month,” he said.
The corvette will be known as BRP Conrado Yap, named after Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK) Medal of Valor awardee Philippine Army Captain Conrado Yap, in Philippine Navy service, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed earlier.
