“[The construction of] our [first] frigate is moving forward. It will arrive in February [or] March of 2020,” Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said on October 22.
He added that the project is “all systems go and we should be happy for our country.”
The Philippine government has a contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for construction of two frigates for Philippine Navy.
The Keel Laying Ceremony for the first frigate was held on October 16 at Ulsan, South Korea.
“The ceremony was conducted at the building dock number 6 of the Special and Naval Shipbuilding Division of HHI. Three blocks of the first PN frigate (with HHI Project Nr 159) was installed on the dock,” said Captain Sergio Bartolome, the Navy officer overseeing the project at HHI.
The Philippine Navy said the keel laying ceremony is a significant activity and a major step towards the completion of the country’s first ever frigate project.
Meanwhile, the steel-cutting for the second frigate took place at Pohang City, South Korea last month. Steel cutting for the first frigate took place April.
