The Philippines will soon be stamping passports of visiting Chinese nationals with Philippine Visa designed with Philippine map which includes territories disputed by other claimants.
In 2012, the Philippines halted stamping the Philippine Visa on Chinese passports when China introduced a passport designed with its nine-dash line claim. The Philippines stamped visas on separate document.
Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Secretary Salvador Panelo during August 6 press briefing said that during the August 5 Cabinet meeting the proposed visa design was presented.
He also said that President Rodrigo Duterte approved a new visa policy for Chinese visitors.
“Ang magandang nakita do doon, mayroong mapa ng Pilipinas na ilalagay kung saan nandoon lahat ‘yung ating teritoryo pati ‘yung mga pinag-aawayan,” Panelo said. “Sa stamp mismo.”
“Siguro hindi lang sa Chinese ‘yun (new visa design). I didn’t hear him (Foreign Affairs Secretary Locsin) say that,” he said.
“But I suppose the logic there is kung ginagawa mo ‘yun sa iba gagawin mo sa lahat,” Panelo explained.
Panelo added that a protocol will be formulated for the implementation, but “definitely” within the year.
