PHL, South Korea discuss corvettes, submarines

Department of National Defense (DND) Assistant Secretary Jesus Rey R. Avilla of the Office for Logistics, Acquisition and Self-Reliant Defense Posture and Vice Minister Seo Hyeung Jin of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of the Republic of Korea (ROK) conducted a bilateral discussion in Seoul, South Korea on May 12, 2021 regarding the defense industry cooperation between the countries.

The DND said among the topics discussed was possible areas of cooperation, such as the procurement of corvettes and submarines for the Philippine Navy.

“Vice Minister Seo assured DAPA’s full support for both intents,” DND said.

“Both parties noted the ROK’s numerous contributions to the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, such as the delivery of two (2) multi-role guided missile frigates officially commissioned in 2020 and 2021 as BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151),” it said.

Assistant Secretary Avilla also expressed appreciation for the ROK’s continuous cooperation with the DND and AFP amid the global health crisis.

DND said that its delegation visited facilities dedicated to the manufacture and production of Korean-made submarines and ammunition raw materials.

“Vice Minister Seo also conveyed his invitation to Assistant Secretary Avilla to visit Korea for the PH-ROK 24th Joint Committee Meeting on Logistics and Defense Industry Cooperation which will be hosted by DAPA this year,” it added.
