Roilo Golez, a former National Security Adviser and Parañaque City Representative, said if he is to advise President Rodrigo Duterte, he will recommend studying the strategy of Vietnam on how it is dealing with China.
“Kung ako mag-aadvise, ang sasabihin ko pag-aralan natin ‘yung ginagawa ng Vietnam. Vietnam, mas matindi ang problema nila kasi kapitbahay nila sa lupa at sa dagat ang China,” Golez said over DZMM.
He explained that Vietnam has over a hundred years of relationship with China. He said Vietnam and China had land and naval encounters in the past.
“Tapos nuong 2014 pinasok ng China, ng isang giant oil rig, ang exclusive economic zone ng Vietnam,” Golez said. He added that Vietnam sent coast guard and fishing vessels to confront the Chinese oil rig escorted by coast guard ships.
“Nagkaroon ng physical encounter, banggaan for about 3 months. After 3 months umatras ang China pero hindi ito nagdulot ng giyera,” he explained. “Hindi nagka barilan kasi iba na ang panahon ngayon, hindi tulad noong 1988, 1979 pwede kayo magputukan but now people are more careful because the world is watching.”
Despite all these, Golez said Vietnam continued diplomatic engagements with China. “Nagpapalitan ng bisita ng head of state, ng premier, tuloy ang trade, tuloy ang relationship, pero tuloy pa rin ang standing up ng Vietnam,” he said.
“Ang ginagawa ng Vietnam, they stand up diplomatically and at the same time they also improve their defense capability,” he explained.
