The Philippine Navy is eyeing to be operating its first submarines by 2027, Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said during the blessing ceremony on September 23 for new amphibious assault vehicles (AAVs) and multi-purpose attack crafts (MPACs) at Navy headquarters in Manila.
“As early as December last year, we sent personnel to France to train for our submarine acquisition program, which hopefully will have the first deliveries of two submarines in 2027,” said Vice Admiral Empedrad.
According to National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, no platform was chosen yet, however, the Navy’s preparation is ongoing.
“Wala pa namang napili, pero we have already a submarine force,” Secretary Lorenzana said in interview at the same event.
“Wala pang submarines, pero we are trying to improve their capabilities to run a submarine, para bago pa lang kunin yung equipment alam na ang gagawin. Para pag dumating yun, we can use them immediately,” the defense chief said.
