National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said during the post State of the Nation Address (SONA) press conference that the Philippines may build hotels in Pag-asa Island in West Philippine Sea in the future.

“In the future, we will be building structures for our troops there and maybe some hotels for Filipinos who would like to go there as tourists,” Secretary Lorenzana said during the said post-SONA press conference held at the ASEAN Theater in the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), July 23.

Currently, according to Secretary Lorenzana, the construction of a beaching ramp is ongoing and may be completed this year.

“The purpose of the beaching ramp is so that we could bring in construction materials and heavy equipment. Without that we cannot bring in anything. After the beaching ramp is completed then we can bring in the sand, the cement, and the heavy equipment to pave our runway,” he explained.

He added that the runway may be extended if needed.

He noted that the building of beaching ramp is being affected by the weather. “If the waves are high then they will stop transporting materials,” Secretary Lorenzana said.
