PHL Armed Forces, Navy chiefs tour Russian guided-missile cruiser

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief-of-Staff Lieutenant General Benjamin Madrigal, accompanied by Philippine Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad visited Russian Navy Slava-class of guided-missile cruiser Admiral Varyag.

Russian warship Admiral Varyag is in the Philippines together with anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Panteleyev and large sea tanker Boris Botuma for a 5-day goodwill visit until January 11.

Lieutenant General Madrigal and Vice Admiral Empedrad were welcomed by Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev and Russian Navy contingent head Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhailov.

“The visit aims to strengthen the relationship between the two navies. It will further enhance and sustain the promotion of peace, stability, and maritime cooperation of the two countries through naval diplomacy and camaraderie,” the Philippine Navy said.
