Philippine Navy to receive 2 anti-submarine helicopters this year

The delivery of Philippine Navy’s two new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters will take place in September this year, Navy Flag-Officer-in-Command Rear Admiral Robert Empedrad told reporters during the alumni homecoming at Philippine Military Academy in Baguio City on February 17.

“Oo, may darating na chopper sa September of this year, dalawa,” Rear Admiral Empedrad said as quoted by GMA News Online.

“Kasama ng frigate ‘yun supposed to be, laging sakay sa frigate dapat ‘yun,” he added.

The Department of National Defense (DND) earlier said that delivery of first unit is expected before 2018 ends, while delivery of second unit is expected early 2019.

In early 2016, the Philippine government contracted Italian aerospace, defence and security company AgustaWestland, now Leonardo, for the delivery of 2 AW159 Wildcat ASW helicopters.

These ASW helicopters will be integral part of two new frigates being acquired from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).
