Philippines to continue patrolling, strengthen islands in WPS: defense chief

The Philippines will continue patrolling the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and will further strengthen islands in the Kalayaan Island Groug, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said discussing what will be the Philippines’ thrust regarding WPS in 2019.

“We will still continue with our activities there, nagpapatrolya tayo regularly, so we will continue on strengthening our islands. Meron tayong siyam na islands, the people at the (BRP) Sierra Madre will still be there,” he said as quoted by Philippine News Agency (PNA).

He added that regular troops rotations and resupply missions will continue.

He also said that the country will jeep on protesting any actions they see that go against Philippines’ interest.

“Meron tayong pera kasing nakalaan na yung mga tirahan ng ating mga sundalo eh kasi ngayon mga kubo-kubo lang yun eh, bigyan naman natin sila ng magandang tirahan, mga barracks, especially dun sa Pag-asa. At the end of next year, we expect the runway to be repaired and we are doing the beaching ramp,” he said expounding on how the country will strengthen Philippine-controlled islands in WPS.
