Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Parola-class patrol vessel BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) appeared to have been signal jammed while doing patrols in West Philippine Sea last week, a PCG officer said as reported by Inquirer.net.
“We could not communicate with our vessel by satellite phone at some point during their patrol in the Spratly Islands. The signal was jammed,” the PCG official said on condition of anonymity as quoted by Inquirer.net.
BRP Sindangan patrolled in Ayungin Shoal where BRP Sierra Madre (LT-57) is grounded, and Panganiban Reef where China constructed an artificial island.
“Whenever our ships are close to China-controlled areas or vessels, they can no longer use their satellite phones likely because of the signal jammers,” the PCG officer said.
The PCG officer also said incidents of signal jamming were also experienced by PCG ships patrolling Bajo de Masinloc also known as Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal).
