PCG putting up radar stations with Japanese assistance

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is putting up 21 radar stations to enhance its capability in monitoring vessels operating in Philippine waters.

According to PCG spokesperson Captain Armand Balilo, 11 radar stations will be funded with Japanese assistance, while 10 will be financed by the Philippine government.

“Malaki talaga ang tulong nitong monitoring ng mga radar kasi malalaman mo kung may pumapasok – naka-connect kami doon sa system ng International Maritime Organization para ma-identify mo kung anong barko ito, ‘wag lang magpatay ng mga tracker nila,” Balilo said in an interview over Super Radyo dzBB on March 3.

He noted that the project is ongoing with some items already issued notices to proceed, while some are in bidding process.

Captain Balilo added that these radar facilities will help PCG respond quicker to distress and prevent maritime accidents.
