Past admin mismanaged West Philippine Sea dispute: Lorenzana

In a media interview after the June 11 flag raising ceremony of Department of National Defense (DND) in Camp Aguinaldo, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said it was the past administration who mismanaged the West Philippine Sea dispute with China.

“The handling is, tingnan niyo ha, anong nadatanan ni Presidente namin, nung pumasok kami ni Presidente? Ha? Kasi nga medyo mainit ‘yung kwan noon eh, nong nadatnan natin. Wala tayong trade with China,” Secretary Lorenzana said.

He said that when the Duterte administration started China is not buying Philippines products, no Chinese tourists were coming, Filipino fishermen are not allowed to fish in Scarborough Shoal, and Filipino troops are being harassed.

Now, Lorenzana said, China is already buying Filipino products like bananas and the Chinese tourists doubled.

“We can fish there and ‘yung ating mga tropa hindi na hina-harass, except ‘yung very isolated incident ‘yung sa Ayungin [Shoal],” he added.

“So is that mismanagement? We have managed it very well through the President’s leadership. Hindi mismanaged ‘yon. Ang nag-mismanage ‘yung previous administration dahil nagkagulo-gulo rito,” he said.
