A study for new military agreement between Philippines and United States is now in process, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez said February 28 during a forum.
“We are now in the process of trying to find ways and means to be able to see how we can either come up with something similar, perhaps, again – still following the President’s thinking about the sovereignty issue,” Ambassador Romualdez said.
He added that the Philippines-Japan Status of Forces Agreement and Philippines-Australia Status of Visiting Forces Agreement are references for the possible new military agreement with US.
“These are the two existing agreements we have with other countries and at the moment I am not at liberty to say what or where we are but that this is being studied and the recommendation will be made to the President,” he explained.
“It is not yet presented to the President. This is merely option for him to see whether it is possible,” Romualdez noted.
