Navy’s corvette from Korea named after PEFTOK hero

The soon to arrive donated South Korean Pohang-class corvette, the former ROKS Chungju (PCC-762), will be known as BRP Conrado Yap in Philippine Navy service, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed to PNA.

Several days ago, MaxDefense Philippines said that the said corvette will be named BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39).

Philippine Army Captain Conrado Yap served as one of the 1,468 Filipino troops comprising the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK).

“Capt. Conrado Yap was killed in the Korean War and Awarded the Medal of Valor,” Secretary Lorenzana said.

He was posthumously awarded “for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life against overwhelming enemy forces at Yultong, North Korea on 22-23 April 1951.”  

According to Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad, the Filipino crew of the donated Korean corvette is expected to travel to South Korea this month for training. Sailing of the ship to Philippines is expected in March to April.
