Navy, defense chiefs launching frigate, visiting donated Korean corvette in May

Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said on March 11 over DWDD that aside from attending the launching of future BRP Jose Rizal in May in South Korea, they will also visit the donated South Korean Pohang-class corvette.

“Our crew [for corvette] will be departing this month and by May ‘pag nandoon na kami malapit na matapos ‘yung repair ng barko,” Empedrad said.

“The training of our crew will be in full speed ahead ‘pag dating namin doon,” he added.

In February, National Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said “the dry-docking and other related repairs of ‘Pohang’ corvette are set to be completed in the second week of June, and turnover is estimated to be by the third week of the same month.”

The corvette will be known as BRP Conrado Yap, named after Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK) Medal of Valor awardee Philippine Army Captain Conrado Yap, in Philippine Navy service, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed earlier.
