Navy assesses Winged-In Surface Effect aircraft for naval operations

The Philippine Navy’s research arm Naval Research and Technology Development Center (NRTDC) is looking into a potential system for naval operations, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NSSC) said.

The potential system is called manned hybrid aircraft or Winged-In Surface Effect (WISE) aircraft.

According to NSSC, the aircraft is being developed by Cebu Technological University through the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

“It was proposed to the Philippine Navy to help its transportation and logistics operations and other naval operations,” NSSC said.

“[O]nce completed, the aircraft will be used to transport personnel and supplies anywhere within the country. Moreover, it could be used for rescue and hospital transport, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR), maritime surveillance, amphibious operations, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), launching and recovery of unmanned surface and sub surface vessels, and could carry towed array and sensors,” NSSC said.
