Marines conduct donning of ranks in PHL’s northernmost island

The marines made history as they conducted donning of ranks to two newly promoted captains at the peak of Mavulis Island in Batanes province, September 6, 2018.

MBLT-8 personnel led by its Commanding Officer, LTCOL ROMMEL B BOGÑALBAL PN(M) together with members of the BRP Dagupan City (LS-551) and 1st Naval Waterfront Construction Battalion hiked the peak of Mavulis Island and conducted the donning of ranks to newly promoted officers CPT JERICK IAN R DULIGUEZ PN(M) and CPT LEOMAR P SAN JOAQUIN PN(M) in a simple ceremony following the flag raising rites.

“The donning of ranks to the two Marine Officers in this northernmost island of the archipelago is the first of its kind, once in a lifetime experience for both the marine captains who were previously deployed in the island of Tawi-Tawi. It is also a unique experience for those officers and personnel who were there to witness this momentous event”, explained Marine Battalion Landing Team 8 (MBLT8) Commanding Officer LtCol Bogñalbal. Significantly, this historical event also reinforces every soldier’s burning passion to protect every island in our territory” LtCol Bogñalbal added.

Earlier, a fleet-marine task unit composed of members of MBLT-8 and personnel of BRP Dagupan City set sail from Port Irene, Sta. Ana, Cagayan to bring building materials needed for the construction of a fishermen shelter in the said island. Braving the bad weather, these soldiers were able to unload all the cargoes needed for the project that will benefit the local fishermen.

It can be recalled that in April 30, 2016, the AFP Northern Luzon Command also hoisted the Philippine flag in Mavulis Island as a way of asserting the country’s sovereign territory on the island and heeding the call of the local government to help turn the island into a resting place and haven of shelter for Filipino fishermen. As of writing, the construction of the fishermen shelter is underway. Northern Luzon Command
