Japan selects F-35B for short take-off, vertical-landing fighter jet acquisition

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MOD) announced on August 16 that Lockheed Martin F-35B fifth-generation aircraft was selected for Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF)’s short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) fighter jet acquisition.

The Japanese government is acquiring STOVL fighter jets that can operate aboard Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Izumo-class multi-purpose destroyers which will undergo modification.

According to Japanese MOD, the F-35 satisfied all the STOVL requirements of JSDF.
