Japan eyes buying 20 more F-35 fifth-generation combat aircraft

The Japanese government is planning to buy 20 United States-made F-35A fifth-generation combat aircraft as part of its new medium-term defense plan for 2019-2023, several news outlet quote Yomiuri Shimbun.

According to the report, Japan eyes to have 42 units of said fighters under Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) by 2024.

It added that the new defense plan prescribes the additional purchase of 20 more F-35s and all of them must be deployed in Japan by 2028.

According to the report the acquisition aims to deter the growing military activity of China.
