Japan commissions new destroyer JS Maya

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has officially received and commissioned to service Maya-class destroyer JS Maya (DDG-179).

The ceremony held on March 19 was graced by Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD) Minister Tarō Kōno.

“In the ceremony, the ship was transferred to JMOD and hoisted the flag of JMSDF. As part of the JMSDF ships, DDG Maya will strive to maintain public safety and order on the seas,” Japan MOD said.

JS Maya is a 170-meter guided-missile destroyer built by Japan Marine United Corporation.

Another Maya-class destroyer, the future JS Haguro (DDG-180) is expected to enter JMSDF service in 2021.
