Indonesia launched its third Nagapasa-class, derived from South Korean Chang Bogo-class, diesel-electric attack submarine for the Indonesian Navy on April 11, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence said. The said submarine is the first locally assembled submarine at Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya, Indonesia.
“The launch of the 3rd Submarine is a major breakthrough in the National Defense Industry,” Indonesia Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said.
The submarine was built jointly by PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) as part of technology transfer.
In 2011, Indonesia signed a contract with DSME for three submarines, two built in South Korea and one assembled in Indonesia as part of technology transfer.
The first and second submarines were commissioned in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
